Among the various historically significant monuments spread across Paris, the Palais de Chaillot is one attraction that you should surely visit during your Paris tour. The building is a key vantage point in the city that offers a spectacular view of the Paris skyline and its prominent attractions like the Eiffel Tower. The Palais de Chaillot is historically rich like most of the monuments in Paris. Visiting this extravagant building enriches you with what Paris exactly offers such as the affluent gardens, architecture, and museums.

Located in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, the Palais de Chaillot is situated in the Trocadero, an area that houses many of the major avenues, buildings, and schools. In fact, the richness and distinctive nature of the monument and its surrounding are what makes it a truly worthwhile attraction to visit in Paris.

The origins of the Palais de Chaillot can be traced back to 1878 when the structure was first erected for the World’s Fair. Initially, the building comprised of an expansive concert hall adjoined by two wings and two towers. The structure had a mix of the elements of the Byzantine architecture and Moorish. The current building was built on the old palace’s foundations for hosting the 1937 World’s Fair in Paris.

Designed by Louis-Hippolyte Boileau, Jacques Carlu, and Leon Azema, the new Palais de Chaillot had both modern and classical elements embedded in its architecture. There were also several notable additions to the old building such as the two wings shaped like a wide arc. The wide esplanade in the center provides visitors with an excellent view of the Eiffel Tower across the Seine River.

The Palais de Chaillot houses numerous museums some of which are renowned among the major ones located in Paris. Located in its south wing is the Musee de la Marine, a naval museum that exhibits artifacts of King Louis XV and the Musee de l’Homme or the Museum of Man. This museum features various anthropological treasures that give visitors a true glimpse into humanity in numerous ways.

Another prominent museum located in the Palais de Chaillot is the Cite de l’architecture et du Patrimoine. It is newly opened and consists of an elaborate collection of exhibits about French architecture from the Middle Ages to the present day. The collections include about 6000 sculpture casts, scale models, and 20,000 photographs.

Cineaqua and Jardin Du Trocadero

While visiting the Palais de Chaillot, the Cineaqua is another worthwhile sight that you will come across. This massive aquarium contains approximately 43 tanks that house a diverse range of aquatic life such as fishes and invertebrates. The 24-acre garden Jardins du Trocadero splendidly laid out across the front of the Palais de Chaillot offers the best possible view of the Eiffel Tower across the Seine. Besides, the rectangular pond and fountain in the garden also add to the beauty of the Palais de Chaillot.
